No matter what part of the world you are from, whether you are trying to enjoy the beauty of the changing leaves and bracing yourself for winter or delighting in the blossoms of spring and dreading a long hot summer, your electricity bills will continue to grow unless you do something different this year. Going green has never been easier, and it can help you save some money all year long. So, where do you start?
There are literally dozens of things you can do to save some money on your electric bills, some of them are big and will save you thousands, others are smaller and will save you hundreds. Either way make as many changes as you can now and you'll save money for years to come.
Here are some of the easier, less expensive changes you can make:
1. Unplug unused electronics. You may not realize it but even if they're not turned on they are still in stand-by mode and they are still drawing electricity, so you are still paying for using them. Just unplug them.
2. Replace your old style light bulbs with energy saving light bulbs. You can buy a bunch now and go through your house, or you can just wait until a bulb burns out to replace it.
3. Did you know that your fridges and freezers use more power nearly empty than full? Therefore if you have two half filled ones turn one off and you will save a heap.
4. Choose to have your heaters a couple of degrees cooler and coolers a couple of degrees warmer and you might be surprised by the difference. When you are not using a room turn off the heating or cooling, it is simple good sense.
All of these things will save you a few hundred dollars over the course of the year. If you want more savings then it might cost you a little but you should consider these things:
1. Install energy efficient windows and doors which will cut down on leakage from your house and increase the efficiency of both your heating and cooling..
2. Increase the amount of insulation you have in your home, both in the walls and ceiling.
3. Build your own wind turbine. Some of these wind energy kits can reduce your electricity bill by more than half with the investment of a mere couple of hundred dollars.
4. Consider getting a solar hot water service, and heat your water for free, because in a normal house about a third of your electricity goes to heating hot water.
As you can see, you do have options when it comes to saving money on your utility bills and going green. You can start as big, or as small, as you want. The important thing is that you start today.
